She also served as\u00a0United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights\u00a0from 1997 to 2002 and a\u00a0Senator\u00a0for the\u00a0University of Dublin\u00a0from 1969 to 1989. She first rose to prominence as an academic,\u00a0barrister\u00a0and campaigner. She defeated\u00a0Fianna F\u00e1il&#8217;s\u00a0Brian Lenihan\u00a0and\u00a0Fine Gael&#8217;s\u00a0Austin Currie\u00a0in the\u00a01990 presidential election, becoming the first Independent candidate nominated by the\u00a0Labour Party, the\u00a0Workers&#8217; Party\u00a0and Independent Senators. She was the first elected President in the office&#8217;s history not to have had the support of\u00a0Fianna F\u00e1il<\/p>\n<p>She is widely regarded as a transformative figure for Ireland, and for the Irish presidency, revitalising and liberalising a previously conservative, low-profile political office. She resigned the presidency two months ahead of the end of her term of office to take up her post in the United Nations. During her UN tenure she visited\u00a0Tibet\u00a0(1998), the first High Commissioner to do so; she criticised Ireland&#8217;s immigrant policy; and criticised the use of\u00a0capital punishment in the United States. She extended her intended single four-year term by a year to preside over the\u00a0World Conference against Racism 2001\u00a0in\u00a0Durban, South Africa; the conference proved controversial.
